ParcAberporth 2008 - Unmanned Systems activity is never 'dull, dirty or dangerous'

ParcAberporth 08 - UAV Control During the summer of 2008 the Welsh Assembly Government hosted the most successful ParcAberporth Unmanned Systems (PAUS) Demonstration event to date, attracting record numbers of exhibitors and delegates. We are extremely proud that the ParcAberporth events have played a major role in driving the European UAS sector forward, achieving a number of records along the way:

  • the first civil flight of an unmanned aerial system in civil airspace on 13th July 2004,
  • the first ever ‘swarming’ of UAVs in European civil airspace,
  • the events were instrumental in West Wales Airport developing the world’s only operations manual to provide for the routine flight of unmanned systems.

The PAUS 2008 event achieved ground breaking results with:

  • A sell out conference that included a United Nations as guest speakers,
  • ASTRAEA 2008 conference held on site with over 200 delegates attending,
  • Approximately 450 attendees (215 delegates, 200 exhibitors, 15 press, 10 speakers) from at least 15 countries,
  • 41 internal exhibitors,
  • 8 external exhibitors,
  • Over 20 applications to fly plus 1 ground system, 18 systems approved to fly.

Having achieved our objective to establish ParcAberporth as Europe’s premier location for the test and evaluation of unmanned system, the Welsh Assembly Government will now step back from hosting the ParcAberporth series of events, allowing the private sector to take this forward, and us to channel our energies into the continued development of the sector.

We look forward to working in partnership with industry to create even bigger opportunities to develop the unmanned systems market in 2009!
