Life Sciences

The Life Sciences team in International Business Wales (IBW) focuses on identifying and assisting companies in the Bioscience & Healthcare sector to locate and grow their business in Wales.

This team consists of experienced sector professionals – who are all scientists with track records in the commercial world, and thus able to talk shop knowledgeably with clients and understand their needs, both from a scientific and a business perspective.

The team is passionate about helping bioscience businesses realise their potential.  Of course, it can only do this with the willing cooperation, assistance and expertise of a wide range of colleagues in the bioscience sector in Wales.  This ‘Team Wales’ approach brings together dedicated people within the Welsh Assembly Government, the NHS, academia and the private sector to create a pool of globally competitive players, world-class expertise and academic excellence.

The wider bioscience sector in Wales i.e. those companies involved in the research, development and manufacture of medical, biotechnology and pharmaceutical products involves around 276 dedicated companies and another 46 companies providing consultancy services to the sector.  The sector is assumed to be worth around £1.3bn and to employ around 15,000 people many in high quality post graduate and post doctoral roles.  In addition a large number of Welsh NHS departments and academic institutions are engaged commercially in the sector providing contract research, clinical trials, and increasingly licensing IP created by experts in these institutions.

Sector Strengths

  • Medical Technology (e.g., Biomet UK, Huntleigh and Gyrus ACMI, an Olympus Company)
