Prince of Wales Scholarships aim to attract world’s most talented graduates

The Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarships programme, run by the University of Wales, aim to attract the world’s most talented graduates to work with Welsh businesses by offering one of the best financially supported PhD packages in the world.

Each student will receive a stipend of £20,000pa, a research grant of £5,000 and have their tuition fees paid.  Professor Marc Clement, Vice Chancellor of the University, said: “These are among the best research grants offered anywhere in the world and demonstrates our seriousness and commitment in getting the best talent to come to Wales.”

The programme, which will help to create links between universities and industry, was launched in May this year and will recruit 100 of the world’s best graduates between 2009 and 2012.

These graduates will help improve R&D capability and cutting-edge thinking, generating new products, processes, patents and services to come out of Wales.

The Prince of Wales, who is Chancellor of the University of Wales, said: “They are, I think, a very practical and very exciting response to how higher education can help the Welsh economy in a time of crisis.”

The aim of the programme is to help create a knowledge-based economy and attract new businesses to locate in Wales.

The Scholarships form part of the University of Wales ‘Global Academy’ programme whose purpose is to boost the economic and innovative performance of Wales through enhanced synergy between higher education and the private sector.
