Make a new date for Brazil and Mexico

Latin America will not necessarily be on every company’s ‘first choice’ list of places to find new business. But in a rapidly changing global economy, there are now huge opportunities to be exploited in countries such as Brazil and Mexico – the two nations being singled out for trade missions over the coming months.

The Brazil Mission has now been moved to September 2010 and the Mexico Mission is now January 2011 – two chances to make an impression in very large economies that recognize the quality of UK products and services. And while the Brazil mission is focused around the Rio Oil and Gas Show, other sectors will also be well catered for.

Brazil is the largest national economy in Latin America, the world's tenth largest economy at market exchange rates and the ninth largest in purchasing power parity. As one of the BRIC Countries, it has been marked out as one of the four nations expected to drive growth in the global economy in the coming decades.

Rich in natural resources, Brazil has large and developed agricultural, mining, manufacturing and service sectors, as well as having huge supplies of oil and gas. The country is also exploiting renewable energy resources – largely through hydroelectricity and ethanol. Technological development is largely being driven by research being undertaken in public universities and research institutes, while another of Brazil’s core strengths is aerospace – the country has the second largest number of airports and airfields (2,500) in the world.

The 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics offers huge possibilities for UK companies, with infrastructure contracts to be won, and opportunities in logistics, tourism, security and much more.

The sheer size and scope of Mexico’s economy, the world’s 11th largest, mean opportunities abound in many key sectors. But it is also an unrivalled gateway to other markets - taking advantage of its 0% tariff trading arrangements with both the EU and NAFTA countries.

The automotive sector in Mexico is strong, as are the oil and gas sector. There are also a number of heavy industry processes in Mexico presenting opportunities for companies specializing in clean technologies, renewables and energy efficiency processes. In the life sciences sphere, some important developments are taking place. Other sectors offering growth and trading potential include security, defence and TV content.
