Wherever you live in Wales you are never far from the countryside. Wales has over 400 castles, three National Parks and five areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The capital city, Cardiff, is a popular destination for visitors, whether to experience its history, the waterfront, enjoy a major event at the Millennium Stadium (External Website) or to trace the locations used in filming internationally popular television programmes such as Dr Who.

Visit Wales is the Welsh Assembly Government’s tourism team within the Department for Heritage, and is responsible for the promotion and development of tourism in Wales.

In 2007, Wales received 8.85 million UK overnight visitors; these visitors stayed for 32.1 million nights, spending around £1,418 million.
Holidays are by far the main reason for a visit (73%) whilst business travel accounts for around 9% of UK overnight trips.
